The University of Louisville received the largest single athletic gift in its history today when Papa John’s Inc., announced a $10 million donation toward financing expansion of Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.
The gift raises to $22 million the total paid by Papa John’s Inc., for naming rights to the 10-year-old stadium.
The expansion is expected to raise stadium capacity to around 64,000.
“This is a great day for Cardinal football and U of L athletics,” U of L athletic director Tom Jurich said at a news conference this morning. “When we finish this thing, I think it will be the best college football stadium in America. We don’t want any bleacher seats, so we’re not going to be the biggest, but we do want to be the best.”
Papa John’s CEO Nigel Travis also suggested this morning that the Papa John’s Bowl, now held in Birmingham, Ala., might consider moving to Louisville once expansion is completed.
