Blogging live from Morgantown, where the host West Virginia Mountaineers are decked out in all-gold uniforms on “Gold Rush” night in Milan Puskar Stadium.
U of L, meanwhile, has managed to don uniforms even uglier — the white-jersey, black-pants scheme that is probably the Cardinals’ worst look. No matter, the Cards, who are 16-point underdogs, are more interested in keeping this game from getting ugly and, in fact, putting more pressure on the WVU defense than the Mountaineers have seen all season.
Look for plenty of ball-control passing from the Cards, because there’s little way to control the Mountaineers’ multi-pronged offense otherwise.
Defensive changes made by coordinator Mike Cassity before the Cincinnati game — keeping the cornerbacks primarily in man-to-man coverage to allow for more run support — could match up well with West Virginia’s offensive aims. But the personnel doesn’t figure to match up well. And if WVU quarterback Pat White can have some early success through the air — particularly with the deep ball — U of L could be in for a long night on national television.
Look for more observations throughout the game right here . . .
