U of L-WVU: And they're off

After one offensive series for each team, both can feel good about their defenses.

U of L stopped pretty much everything WVU tried, and even had a near-interception on a deep throw by Pat White, but Deon Palmer’s near-pick was overturned on review. Still, the play plants some doubt in White about the deep ball, and so was a valuable play for the Cardinals.

On 3rd and 19, WVU tried a screen to Slaton. If there’s anything U of L’s defense figures to have practiced against, it’s that.

U of L’s first two plays from scrimmage were impressive. A 10-yard dump to tight end Gary Barnidge and a seven-yard run up the middle by Brock Bolen. But on second and short, U of L went shotgun with one back, WVU came hard with the rush and an incomplete pass led to a 3rd and 3 that U of L couldn’t convert.

Now U of L has it back on its second drive, first down at its own 36.
