Lots of email from Florida this morning after I said that Florida State should have pulled out of the Music City bowl in the wake of an ongoing academic cheating scandal.
The interesting thing is, most are more inflamed about the headline — which I did not write — than about the column I did write. The headline in the print edition was “Seminoles a disgrace to football, UK.” The online headline at the C-J home page is “Seminoles are shameful.”
We don’t write our own headlines at the C-J. Often, we’ll suggest them, though I didn’t on this one. And these headlines go a step farther than the column did, I thought.
I simply said Florida should have stayed home for this bowl game. I didn’t say the Seminoles were a disgrace to football (the column never uses the words “disgrace” or “shameful.”)
Florida State, it’s worth noting, has probably been in less NCAA trouble than Kentucky over the past 30 years. My point this morning, which I think the column makes, is that this particular Florida State team, gutted and under a cloud as it is, should have stayed home.
