A few thoughts:
1). UK is running bigger defenders at Dominic James, with some success. The Cats started the game with Ramon Harris on him, and they’ve switched Derrick Jasper to him at times.
2). Marquette coach Tom Crean rightly realizes that the road to beat UK is simple: Pound the ball to the post. It sounds easy, but it’s not. UK puts great pressure on the ball and makes it really tough to get the ball in there. After missing several post-ups of big men with Ramon Harris or Jasper on them, Marquette came out of the first TV timeout and went to the post on back-to-back possessions. The problem for the Golden Eagles is that they don’t have the best inside finishers. The other problem is that UK is a lot tougher defensively in there than you think.
3). A good offensive start from Ramel Bradley and Joe Crawford of UK, but the Wildcats are going to need someone else. They’ve also turned it over twice on their last four possessions, and as I said in the pregame, that’s something that they’re really going to have to watch.
4). Marquette obviously thinks it can get a big game from Lazar Hayward. And he is the game’s leading scorer with 6 points so far.
More to come . . .
