It’s an election that’s long overdue. Vitale has become the voice of college basketball and an iconic figure who has played a major role in the greatest period of popularity in the game’s history.
You know a person has reached that status when his mere presence at an event means almost as much as what he says. Vitale as an analyst has his fans and detractors. His style grates on a great many college basketball fans.
But I know this from having met and interviewed him, and seeing him at numerous events and numerous settings: The enthusiasm he has for college basketball is genuine. It’s not an act for the cameras.
Basketball has come to this — if Dick Vitale is in the house, you know the game is a big deal. When Vitale is in the house, fans are more excited, players notice, people watch.
So it makes sense that of all the houses in basketball, the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame is one that Vitale definitely belongs in.
And now he’ll be there, his voice echoing through the halls.
