Live from Fabulous Cat-Vegas . . .

That’s the phrase on the T-shirt of choice for Cat fans who have made the trip to Las Vegas and The Orleans Hotel and Casino for tonight’s game against Kansas State. Above is the view from my press row seat.

So listen to this scam. At 3 o’clock this afternoon, I was at home in Louisville. Now, I’m just a little ways off the Las Vegas strip getting ready to watch UK in a midnight Eastern time game.

With no deadline!

There’s no way to get this game into the paper, so my column, and Brett Dawson’s UK game story, will go on the Internet only. That means no space limitations for us, though we’ll try to get them written fairly soon after the game for anyone who wants to stay up later than they already are. Otherwise, you can find my column on this game at courier-journal.com in the morning, or right here on this blog whenever it is finished.

It’ll be interesting to see how UK looks after a couple of confidence-building wins. I suspect it’ll be a back-and-forth game with Kansas State, which is a bit of a question mark itself.

The Cats’ worst problem has been turnovers this season, and that’s an area where Kansas State excels, so the matchup could be better.

Check back here periodically through the game for updates or opinions. And feel free to email anytime with questions.

Also, let me send a quick congratulations to Bellarmine University and head coach Scotty Davenport, who knocked off No. 3-ranked Florida Southern 62-60 tonight at the University of Southern Indiana. It’s probably one of the bigger non-conference wins ever for Bellarmine.

More to come . . .

  1. Hey, as a long-suffering Bellarmine fan, thanks for the mention. That was a big win for them tonight. BU’s program plays in the toughest D-II conference and has gone up and down, but they look to be loaded this year: several D-I transfers and some other guys who were recruited by D-I schools, but chose to be Knights.Should be a fun season, and things will really get interesting when, as many rumors I’ve heard go, Bellarmine moves up to D-I after the NCAA moratorium on moving up ends in three or so years.

  2. I covered the Great Lakes Valley Conference for six years — Bruce Pearl at Southern Indiana, Bob Valvano at Bellarmine, Ray Harper at Kentucky Wesleyan, and Northern Kentucky had some great teams during those years too. It is great basketball.Pearl used to call it the “Little Ten.”
