Bellarmine climbs to No. 5

Coach Scott Davenport’s Bellarmine Knights have moved up to the No. 5 ranking in the NABC Division II poll, the highest ranking in school history.

The Knights are off to a 12-0 start and face their biggest test of the season Thursday night at 8 p.m. when perennial Division II power Kentucky Wesleyan visits Knights Hall.

I’ll go ahead and say this — if the game isn’t a sellout, there’s something wrong with us in this town. It may well be one of the better college basketball games of the year in this city.

I’ll be there, hope a lot of other folks will be too.

“Scotty’s just doing an outstanding job, and he’s built it up the right way,” Davenport’s former boss, Rick Pitino, said on Tuesday. “My only regret is that I’ve not gotten over to see them play yet, and I can’t wait until I can do that.”

For anybody else who feels that way, Thursday would be a good night.

Here’s a column I did on Davenport and the Knights a couple of weeks ago.
