About 30 minutes to tipoff at Knights Hall. Last weekend was the program’s first sellout since 1989, and they may have a chance at it tonight, even going against the BCS championship game on television.
It’s a little like old home week for me. Kentucky Wesleyan radio man Joel Utley was one of the first folks I ran into inside the building. The Voice of the Panthers is, I believe, in his 48th year as the radio man for KWC basketball. Certainly, if you ever want to hear a part of Kentucky hoops history, you should make an effort to hear an Utley game call sometime. Another old KWC friend is Roy Pickerill, sports information director, and one of the gold standards in that profession, for any sport or level.
But one thing isn’t as it usually is. This year, Bellarmine is a decided favorite in this game. The Knights carry a 12-0 record into the game and a best-ever No. 5 national ranking. They already own wins over several nationally ranked opponents this season, but a win over Wesleyan would be special in establishing this team’s arrival as a Great Lakes Valley Conference contender.
It should be a good one, and I’m looking forward to it.
