Outlets in Arkansas are hot on the story, and several TV stations in Louisville prepare poised to go ahead and report the story.
I haven’t been able to reach John L., who left his radio job at WKRD recently, so I’ll not make a definitive statement.
I will say that if John L. does go, Petrino has scored himself something of a coup. John L. is a great motivator of players, and a fantastic judge of talent. Go back through his old Louisville rosters and look at guys he went out and found who turned out to be NFL caliber. None stands out to me more than Kerry Rhodes.
Given Smith’s ability to recruit in Georgia, Alabama and Florida, Petrino only enhances Arkansas presence on a field that is getting more competitive on the recruiting front by the day.
I’m not sure what role Smith would fill, but special teams will have to be one specialty.
Smith is one of the great people in coaching. The city has been fortunate to have him as a coach, and as a resident, and I sure hope he’ll come back here when he finally decides to hang it up for good.
The job he did as coach here only looks better as years go by. And here’s wishing him more success to come.
