The new college basketball polls aren’t out yet, but the University of Louisville men’s basketball team is at No. 1 in one new set of rankings.
Stats guru Ken Pomeroy, whose work on college basketball numbers will give you a headache if you try to wrap your mind around it too fast, has the Cardinals ranked No. 1 in adjusted defensive efficiency.
Basically, the defensive efficiency stat is computed using points allowed per 100 defensive possessions. In this case, Pomeroy adjusts the number to take into account the opponents’ offensive efficiency.
So there you have it. The numbers confirm what we already knew — the Cards’ defense is pretty good.
Now here’s something perhaps more interesting. Of Pomeroy’s top 30 ranked teams in the nation, only two teams have offensive efficiency ratings outside of the 60s.
Purdue is No. 79. U of L is No. 103.
What’s it mean? Well, for starters, if the Cards’ offense comes around, they could be scary.
By the way, in the same numbers, Kentucky ranks 15th in defensive efficiency and 35th in offensive. (Adjusted, of course).
