It’s the first full day of college football, but could be a big day of news from the NFL for some former college stars, too. On a big cut day in the NFL, former University of Louisville quarterback Hunter Cantwell was waived by the Carolina Panthers.
It’s not a surprise. Cantwell was the No. 4 quarterback. But he played well in the two preseason games he got to play in, completing 9 of 16 passes for 120 yards and the only TD pass thrown by a Panther so far in the preseason. His quarterback rating of 101.0 was by far the team’s highest.
So now there’s a waiting game.
NFL teams have 24 hours to claim Cantwell off the waiver wire, if nobody does, Cantwell becomes a free agent. Word out of his camp is that he’d like to stay in Carolina on the practice squad if he’s not claimed. Former U of L teammate Gary Barnidge is building a house in Charlotte, and Cantwell has enjoyed the Carolina organization.
Hoping for the best for him, and all the others from local schools making their way in the NFL.
