Calipari Hoops for Haiti telethon under way

University of Kentucky coach John Calipari wasn’t just moved by the news stories following the devastating earthquake in Haiti. He was moved to action.

The coach and UK athletic department have quickly organized a telethon to raise money for disaster relief. It just began at noon and runs until 1:30 p.m. It can be seen on WKYT television in Lexington or WMYO, Channel 58, in Louisville.

Donations also can be made by visiting Calipari’s website, You can watch the telethon live on the web by clicking this link.

Calipari said he’s had great immediate response to the telethon, which will feautre UK players answering phones. He expects to have a handful of college coaches call in and pledge support, and will auction off a number of items, including dinner with him and his wife at their Lexington home.

Calipari has asked his more than 1 million Twitter followers to each give at least a dollar. He, and all the folks at UK who have scrambled to put this together in the middle of a busy basketball season, should be commended for tapping into the program’s hoops passion for a deeper cause.
