An emailer says I’m biased because I won’t say in tomorrow’s paper that U of L” owns the state” in basketball after its second straight win in the series, as I did when UK beat U of L in football this year.
I pointed out to her, at some length, that there’s a world of difference between U of L football and UK basketball, and between a 27-2 win and a three-pointer near the buzzer. I didn’t say UK “owned the state” in football just because of two football victories — but because of the overall picture and the way the near future is shaping up between the teams. Certainly, if UK had just squeaked by U of L in football this year, I wouldn’t have said that UK “owned the state” in a column, so the order and progression of things also counts.
Still, I open the question up to you fine folks. Are they the same? I know what I think the answer is, but you’re free to weigh in here.

You must mean that UL “owns the state”….Funny how you dismiss a last second bb win (a game which UK only led once by 1 point for exactly 2 seconds 43-42 and a game that was only tied twice) but a last second td in football last year suddenly vaults them to “owning” status.Yes they won handily in football this year and the cards won handily in basketball last year in their house by 14 points.I guess it takes UofL winning 8 of 9 games in football to get “owning status” but UK only has to win 2 to get the same.I expect nothing less from the CJ. I’m surprised you waited this long to proclaim UK the greatest thing ever.
I agree with the emailer about the bias. I don’t see a difference. UL owns in-state bragging rights in basketball for the past 2 years. UK owns in-state football bragging rights after winning the last 2 years. The UL fans can complain all they want about owning UK in football over the past 10 and the UK fans can do the same for basketball. It depends on how many years of observation taken into account.If the period is 2 years, UL owns basketball and UK owns football. Get over it.

I agree with you Eric, but for different reasons. In football, there is little competition outside of UofL and UK, but in Basketball WKU beat UofL, and Murray and Morehead are both good. Owning the state in Basketball involves many more teams than just the big 2.

it was a good game, no uk never really led but they were within a small run the whole game. the last 2 years the norm of uk dominating the hardwood & ul the gridiorn has been reversed but the only real way to see is who "ownes" who is looking @ the big picture & the big picture tells me uk wins 2 out of every 3 in basketball & football is about the same.
The basketball rivalry will always be fairly even and there will be jokers in the deck such as WKU every so often. But right now football has clearly swung in the Cats’ direction. It isn’t just the losses to UK, it’s 3 straight bowls for UK and two straight toilet bowls for UofL (thanks Steve). It’s also recruiting. We used to get most of the Louisville kids and some out state kids but UK is now getting pretty much whoever they want. I have no clue what our recruiters are doing. We have the worst kicking game in college ball and the top vote getter for the CJ All State team for the first time in history is a kicker who UofL didn’t even recruit. Thanks again Steve. I hate to say it but UK does own the state in football. Did I say “Thanks Steve?”
